S Y N O P S I S  Shot on a lake, the film Prelude is a metamorphic rendition of the visual phenomenon of the reflection of light on water. The reductive imagery of formations of floating white lines on a black background is accompanied by a minimal, yet highly emotive piece of music. The later was created by layering and manipulating the recordings of a church bell. Repetitious, monotone and bold, it plays off the fleeting movements of seemingly countless lines that at times are seen individually, whilst at other times they briefly form a kind of texture. The film, being condensed to its bare minimum, is looking for the dramatic and the intense.

Are we being prepared for something? Or is something very different happening? Sunlight plays over and glances off the surface of a lake. But filmmaker Nadine Poulain isn’t interested in romantically glittering light. She is interested in physical phenomena. Pared back as far as they can go. White lines on an inky background – not one sign of nature remains visible in this experimental dance, where images fade into one another and lose their colour. The rumbling seductive soundtrack is like something from a David Lynch film, and it creates a sensation you can lose yourself in.
