S Y N O P S I S  Shot almost entirely in a fish glass, the film Bergen – Mar del Plata was realised by Nadine Poulain as part of her Master program at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. Besides the created footage, it uses a mix of still photography, painting and digital compositing. The film’s tonal range spans a vast graduation of muted colours, as well as greys.

Bergen – Mar del Plata is loosely based on the story of U977, the German submarine that refused to surrender at the end of the Second World War and embarked on a three and a half months journey to Argentina instead. The well-known story of those young submariners, who disobey the Allies and risked their lives for their wish to make a new start in liberty, had been subject to wild speculations and persisting rumours. At the backdrop of the timeless story of a world constructed on the shreds of its own destruction, an evocative imagery and sound design seek to open up a wide array of associations, rich in both hope and despair.
