SYNOPSIS

Depicting the close up of a waterfall, the experimental film Nocturne is a painterly take on the forces of nature. The hypnotic quality, the sheer power and that particular awe, that the spectacle of masses of falling water may trigger, were the starting point for the project. Both, image and sound of the film were shot in Iceland and originate from the same waterfall.

In Nocturne the characteristic haste of a waterfall is replaced by an extreme slowness. Therefore otherwise hidden qualities are rendered visible. Minimal in visual and acoustic stimuli, emphasis is given to fleeting moments and subtle tonal changes. In a continuous fade, rich textures alternate with sparsely and dramatically lit scenes, in which the image appears to be sculpted out of its background as in a bas-relief. Whilst the shades of grey alter, the soundtrack takes on a musical quality, that nevertheless still maintains a sense of physical power and a strong bass . What unfolds is a sombre yet seductive undertow.
